Pre-High Holiday Workshops: The Laws of Repentance

Before the High Holy Days, it is traditional to spend the month of Elul in special preparatory studies. This is the time, before Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, when we study the laws about making amends and about giving and receiving forgiveness. Maimonides tells us that the sacrifices of Yom Kippur were only ever intended to cover us for the sins that we committed against G-d. In matters between human beings, we must approach the people we have harmed directly.

Learn To Read Hebrew

This online class teaches you how to read Hebrew with vowels (nikkud). You will learn the letters and the vowel markings. You will practice reading texts from the prayerbook, Tanach, and other Jewish sources, first in small snippets, and then in larger sections. You can return to the videos from this class as many times as you need.

You can take a self-guided version of the course, or take it together in a group with instructor support.

B'Mitzvah Prep

Do you have a Jewish child who is 11 or 12 years old? It's time to start getting ready for their b'mitzvah.

Bar mitzvah is Aramaic for "son of commandment". Bat mitzvah means "daughter of commandment". The modern term b'mitzvah (pronounced ba-mitzvah) means "in the commandment" and is used as a gender neutral term for both or for the coming of age of a non-binary young person.
